In this essay, compare the religious ideas expressed in each of these stories and explain how they are the same or how they are different. You may decide they have some attitudes that are similar and some which are different; or you might determine that each expresses different ideas of morality; or you could determine that they both express the same moral codes.
The body of your essay will require the following:
- A description of one or two significant religious ideas expressed in "The Lottery."
- A description of one or two significant religious ideas expressed in "A Good Man Is Hard To Find."
- These ideas, or ideals, might be stated specifically in the story; they might be hinted at; they might be implied in actions; they might be implied in dialogue. Put on your discovery hats - see what you discover.
- You will use the text to point to each attitude you want to write about. To do this, quote a section, explain what it means, AND, very important, then explain how you arrived at your conclusion of what it means. This final step will require a full explanation, step by step of your thought process.
- Do this for each point you want to make in each story, one story at a time.
Once these discoveries are identified, quoted, and explained, you then compare each attitude or "moral" in each story, one against the other.
In your conclusion"
Question 1: Explain the most significant idea from each story.
Question 2: Also, once you pinpoint one main idea, moral, or religious tradition for each, explain which one you prefer, AND, very important, explain why you made the choice you made. This final step will require a full explanation, step by step of your thought process.
