Assignment:

a. You have been asked to testify as an expert witness in a dispute between a hospital and an environmental group opposed to the siting of the hospital. The hospital wants to build a new building near the flight path of an airport. The hospital claims that the levels of sound intensity will only rise slightly, ~8 decibels. Furthermore, the new levels of noise are not sufficiently loud enough to produce hearing damage. Therefore it is safe to build the hospital in this location. You are an expert witness for the environmental group. Using research and your knowledge of noise, provide four different arguments based on evidence to refute the hospital's claim. Make sure you describe evidence from class or readings to support your four arguments.

b. Describe one strategy that children and one strategy that teachers/parents use to cope or adapt to chronic noise. What is the evidence from lecture/readings for these two strategies? Explain how each of these coping strategies or adaptations for children and for teachers/parents, respectively could interfere with reading acquisition in children.

c. Describe Rene Dubos' paradox of human adaptability. Explain how one of the coping strategies in part b. of children or adults could be interpreted in light of Dubos' paradox of adaptation.
