Assignment:

Briefly describe and reflect on opportunities for integrating the empirical, aesthetic, ethical, emancipatory (socio-political) and personal patterns of knowing into nursing practice.

  1. Examine the relationship between the four original patterns of knowing (empiric, ethical, aesthetic, and personal) with emancipatory knowledge (i.e. social justice) as the unifying and centering principle for practice.
  2. Engage in knowledge development and application to ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Instructions

The aim of all nursing practice is not just "health," but emancipation and human flourishing. This paper should reflect how by using all ways of knowing, you, as a uniquely qualified graduate nurse, can contribute to that aim. Think back to our first discussion in this course. We examined this idea from Chinn and Kramer (2022) that "...nursing knowledge can provide self-identity and confidence as you have a firmer base when your ideas are questioned...as you become more familiar with knowledge development you can begin to think about how assumptions, definitions, and relationships within each of the patterns of knowing can be challenged ...understanding knowledge development will provide a basis on which to take risks, act deliberately and improve practice" (p. 18; para 2). With this in mind, use the patterns of knowing to reflect on an experience within your own practice or clinical experience that you wish you could go back to and change using at a minimum, the prompts noted below. Make sure that you clearly identify each way of knowing by the use of headers or your paragraph opening sentences. Each way of knowing is to be included in your experience analysis.

  • What was the experience (what was the problem)? (empirical)
  • What did it mean (to you/to others)? (aesthetic)
  • Did you know what to do, and did you do what you knew you should do? (personal)
  • Was it right? Was it responsible? (ethical)
  • What (or who) benefitted? Were changes needed? Were there any barriers (to providing care)? (emancipatory/socio-political)
  • What would you do differently if you could engage in the same experience again? (praxis)

Resources Students may find Chapter Chinn, Kramer & Sitzman (2022) helpful in completing this assignment.
