Assignment 1:

Each week you should report or summarize one news article or report, journal article, Internet resource, etc. that addresses some aspect of the Social Determinants of Health. Ideally it will address the specific topic for that week. Environmental scanning is an information gathering technique that allows you to report relevant information from sources that you already view or utilize. Essentially, it allows each of us to contribute to teaching the class by sharing information that we have found. It is expected that students and the instructor will respond to other's postings. Try to provide a link the reference or at minimum a reference (using AMA style).

My example this week is a new film from Icarus Films: "SEMICOLON; THE ADVENTURES OF THE OSTOMY GIRL". This an example of a genre of films that are used quite commonly in Health Professions Education. They either chronicle or follow a patient or patients with a specific disease or condition and often include health provider comments or interactions. I think Dana, a 25 y/o with severe Crohn's disease had a large part in developing this film. It follows her and her family deal with the disease and consider the implications of complicated transplant surgery. The film also has it's own website:https://semicolonmovie.com/

As soon as I saw the announcement of its release I requested a copy to be purchased by our media center. It has arrived and can be checked out by students, faculty or staff. I watched it an Dana, her mom and health care providers (and college friends) do an amazing job of telling the story andexamining the complicated ethical and health decision making processissues. I search the internet to see if there was any posting about her outcome, when I first saw the movie and just now. I have not be able to find out how she did.

Assignment 2:

This week's discussion question choose a movie or television episode that you could use to create a educational activity. Most films have scenes that reflect health disparities, social determinants of health, health/society inequities, language barriers, biases. Please provide:
Name of film/television episode

Identify Three Scenes

For Each Scene (#1, #2, #3): Describe scene, Describe possible emotional responses to the scene, Describe how you would develop the activity and what teaching strategies you would use. Describe the level of risk for using this activity (Risk in cultural competency is the risk of making a participant/student feel angry or uncomfortable. The lecture will describe levels of risk and give suggestions for when to use low vs high risk activities and discuss the use of debriefing for high risk activities).

A good example is multimedia faculty guide available on MedEdPortal. It uses scenes from the movie "Crash". I would rate most of the scenes as moderate to high risk and would build in time for debriefing. (I have placed Microsoft Word version of the guide in the "Course Content" Section.)
