Introduction - Understanding and interpreting the culture of your organization is important to navigating your internship successfully. As an emerging leader, a critical skill to have in your tool box is the ability to identify the important elements of creating or maintaining a strong and functional culture.
Overview - For this assignment, you will need to complete the following first:
1. Read chapter 8 from How Great Leaders Think: The Art of Reframing by Bolman & Deal (available on MOLE/Schoology)
2. Read "An Introduction to the Competing Values Framework" by Kim Cameron.
Assignment - Your 3-page, double-spaced paper should address the following:
Which of the following culture types best represents your organization's culture: clan, adhocracy, market, or hierarchy? Provide specific examples that illustrate how your organization aligns with the characteristics of that particular type.
Describe one symbol from your organization that best communicates the culture and values of your organization. The symbol could be a story, myth, artifact, hero/heroine, ritual, ceremony, vision, etc. What meaning does this symbol convey and to whom? To what extent do you think the meaning is shared internally, externally, or both?
To what extent do you think your organization's culture is effective? Provide examples to support your analysis. What lessons can you take from the Starbucks case in the Bolman & Deal chapter that can be applied to strengthening or maintaining your organization's culture?
