Prompt. In my lecture this week, I pointed out that reality TV shows actually resemble the Hunger Games in the sense that there is much more alienation than solidarity. Citing specific langauge from the Hunger Games to link your discussion with that text, describe a reality TV show that follows this pattern.
A. Describe one spectacle you have witnessed personally or seen/read about in the media or in the world this week. Describe the spectacle and explain as clearly as you can: how the spectacle was crafted, who crafted it, what purpose(s) (entertainment, advertising, propaganda, power, etc.) it serves, and to what extent you think the spectators seem to buy into the spectacle. To what extent does the purpose of the spectacle seem hidden or apparent? If the spectacle is intended as entertainment, what is involved in taking pleasure in the spectacle? Please use the word spectacle in the special sense of this course (i.e. not just someone who is making a spectacle of him or herself in public).
D. Consider the world in which we live in light of the fictional world of the novel that we are reading this week. Identify and describe (as precisely as you can) any similarities you see between the world of the novel and the world you live in. Be sure to choose similarities to our major course themes. For example, obviously our world, like the world of the Hunger Games, has trees, but this is not an interesting similarity for us, since it has little to do with spectacle or surveillance.
