Question

Describe one spectacle in the media or in the world this week. Describe the spectacle and explain as clearly as you can: how the spectacle was crafted, who crafted it, what purpose(s) (entertainment, advertising, propaganda, power, etc.) it serves, and to what extent you think the spectators seem to buy into the spectacle. To what extent does the purpose of the spectacle seem hidden or apparent? If the spectacle is intended as entertainment, what is involved in taking pleasure in the spectacle? Please use the word spectacle in the special sense of this course (i.e. not just someone who is making a spectacle of him or herself in public).
