Case Study- CISCO SYSTEMS, INC.: COLLABORATING ON NEW PRODUCT INTRODUTION
Develop a one-page paper analyzing the case.
Choose two of the following three prompts to develop a half-page (two or three paragraphs) response to each. Clearly state which of the prompts you are responding to. Consider and reflect on the following points to help guide your analysis:
-Briefly describe the new product development process utilized by Cisco. Compare and contrast Cisco's specific process to the generic new product development process we've discussed in class.
- Does Cisco generally follow a similar path, or do they do things completely differently? How is their process similar to or different from that of IDEO?
-Cisco seems worried about having a smooth, successful launch of its new Viking product.
- Why does the organization seem so worried about the launch of this particular product?
- Is it more complicated than other products it has developed in the past?
o If not, are there other factors causing this anxiety?
-Cisco did an excellent job of engaging lead users in its product development process throughout, a concept we also discussed in class lectures.
- Describe how involving lead users led to key customer insights and major shifts in product design (if any) for Cisco.
- If Cisco had not worked closely with lead users, how might their end-result product and ultimate success in the market have differed?
-Cisco faced a number of pressures from different sources (costs, time, competition, etc.) as they were developing the Viking Project.
- Describe briefly some of these pressures, and how they influenced Cisco's development decisions.
- If one of these pressures - time, for example - were decreased, how might it affect product development decisions?
- What if pressures were increased (for example, what if the product had to be launched in only six months rather than one year?)?
