a. How do the testimonies and stories from the selected readings reflect US social policy?
b. Identify moments within the readings that show grapples of the authors experiencing oppression and privilege at the same time. Describe how these moments complicate simplistic views of identity.
c. Describe how the author of "Civilize Them With A Stick" presented situations that stripped students of their identity. How did those that were the oppressors justify their approach?
d. Identify 5 specific social forces that suppress identity of marginalized persons from the reading. How might you advocate against these forces as a member of society and/or as an educator (be descriptive, specific, and convincing)?
e. From the readings, how did family relationships provide insights about race, class, gender, sexuality, and nationality? As an educator, how could you take information such as this to positively influence the multicultural environment?
f. Discuss the list of concrete strategies that Scarce provided. What are the strengths and limitations of each of these strategies? What challenges might you incur if you were to implement each of these strategies?
g. The readings in Part VI offer many examples of conflict and division. Identify at least 3 moments of coalition or collaboration? Generate your own suggestions for how to create coalitions across differences. Describe the circumstances would such coalitions be effective?
2. Define and describe multicultural education and cultural responsiveness. Identify how you could be responsive to students that face issues provided in the text. Please identify once specific identity issue/challenge from each selection and list a way that you could be responsive as either a member of society or as an educator.
