Describe the key political trends in Chile since 1964, focusing on the period 1964 through the 1980s (that is, the periods of rule by the Christian Democrats, Popular Unity, and the military dictatorship).

In your discussion, do not neglect economics. Include, among other issues,

- the goals and policies (and successes and failures) of the Christian Democrats under Eduardo Frei from 1964 to 1970

- the goals and policies (and successes and failures) of the Popular Unity coalition under Salvador Allende from 1970-1973.

Be sure to discuss

- which groups supported or opposed Allende

- how Allende fell from power and the nature of the military regime under Augusto Pinochet that followed.

- the international context. How did the international context influence these various administrations? What role did the United States play in the 1960s and 1970s in Chile?

"Chilean Way to Socialism," "Church Committee Report on Covert Actions in Chile," and Isabel Allende's Of Love and Shadows are relevant readings. Do not neglect the video lectures.
