Context

In examining globalization, it is unavoidable to read and discuss the interplay of politics and economics. You have probably concluded, correctly, that-to a significant extent-"economics is politics, and vice versa" (Rourke, 2010, p. 282). This assessment will explore the international political economy (IPE) and consider the interplay between politics and economics. We will examine how multinational corporations compete on a global scale and the impacts of this global expansion. Consider both the traditional views on the economy and the alternative route of greater international cooperation, examining regional trade unions and global cooperation, as well as what is necessary for greater economic development worldwide.

With changes in globalization and technology, the ways in which the international economy operates have changed-and continue to change. In our examination of this, we will discuss the history of the IPE and also discuss how the future looks, including trends in cooperation and competition.

Questions to Consider

To deepen your understanding, you are encouraged to consider the questions below and discuss them with a fellow learner, a work associate, an interested friend, or a member of the business community.

What are the effects of a multinational corporation's presence in a country in terms of social development, political development, and economic development?

What are the effects of multinational corporations moving production overseas?

What would be the consequences of banning multinational corporations from moving production overseas?

Are tariffs an important tool to protect against unfair trade practices, or do they lead us to risk retaliations, higher domestic prices, and, in some cases, worse relations with close political and economic allies?

Assessment Instructions

It is becoming more and more common for corporations to expand on an international level, to distribute work and resources across nations, instead of being based solely in one country. This shift has had a profound effect on both national and international economies. Mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, cooperation, and collaboration are all tools used by businesses to remain competitive in today's global landscape.
For this assessment, examine a multinational corporation (MNC), consider the development and structure of this organization, and then consider how this MNC affects the countries in which it is located.

Preparation

In preparation for this assessment, use the Resources provided (or others you find) to research multinational corporations. It is important to be familiar with the characteristics of these types of organizations and understand the effects they have on the countries in which they work, as well as world politics.

Choose a multinational corporation (MNC). You must choose from the list in the Required Resources under the Internet Resources heading.

You may need to research beyond the corporation's Web site in order to complete this assessment.

Directions

For this assessment, complete the following:

Identify and briefly describe the multinational corporation you selected while preparing for this assessment.

Where is the MNC based?

What does it produce? Provide a brief description of its product and use. Where else does the MNC operate, in addition to where it is based?

When did it expand beyond the boundaries of its home country? Why did it expand?

Explain how the MNC affects the political arena in some of the countries in which it is located or works and whether it has become more influential over time.

Describe the social, economic, and environmental responsibilities and influences of MNCs.

Has the corporation you chose taken voluntary steps to improve its social, economic, and environmental performances if there are any criticisms?

Has the MNC, since the inception of the organization, led to greater cooperation or competition (or both) within the countries in which it is located, and has that changed over time?

While content is the most important aspect of your paper, also important are organization, readability, grammar, and spelling. The length of your paper should be determined by its content.

Additional Requirements

Written communication: Should be free of errors that detract from the overall message.

APA formatting: Your paper should be formatted according to APA (6th edition) style and formatting. Include a title page and a reference page.

Length: A typical response will be 4-6 typed and doublespaced pages. Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.
