1. Referring to the table in Ch. 16 of Intentional Interviewing and Counseling, which of these skills stand out as being the most important to you? Which of the skills on the list are you most comfortable with and which do you feel you need to strengthen the most?
2. I think that it is possible for all of us to have our minds wander from time to time. For me I found that when I was doing 5 to 8 outpatient sessions every day, by the time I got to the afternoon, I would have more difficulty staying focused on the clients. I had to develop some strategies to help me ensure that I was staying focused on the client and be fully present in the moment.
Know our tendencies can help us plan for and establish practices to offset our negative tendencies and work to ensure the best therapeutic experience for clients. I think that the strategies you have noted above will serve you well in maintaining focus. What are recommendations do you think you would give to someone else who explained that they sometimes have trouble focusing on their clients?
3. Thank you for sharing and for you self-evaluation. The good news is that the more you engage in the practice of therapy, the more comfortable and natural all of these skills will become.
However, the bad news (well I guess we could call it bad) is that the poor communication habits we develop now will become very difficult to change later on. Working hard to be sure that we are focusing on intentionally using all of the key attending and communication skills will help ensure that we continue to develop the best practices moving forward. What plans do you have to work on continuing to practice and develop your attending skills beyond this course?
4. I agree, it can be challenging to focus on everything that is happening in the session, being fully present for the client, and working to ensure that we are contributing what we need to in order to assist the client effectively. These challenges are even more acute in early stages - and I think it can be even worse when we are in front o the video camera.
For many counselors, taking notes is a great tool that helps them stay connected to both the client along with their own thoughts/observations as well. It can be a valuable skill and useful for a variety of reasons. How do you plan to remain connected an present with the client while taking notes? Do you think this will be a challenge or pose any difficulty for you?
5. Why does the statement, "crisis scenarios require an ethical response" mean? How do you determine the ethical response in a crisis situation?
6. he points you have included are valuable guidelines to help ensure that we are working in ways that are both effective and ethical. However, pertaining specifically to crisis situation and clients in crisis, how do you think their potential vulnerability in the moment comes into play?
What about client abandonment, how does that factor into crisis work? Do professional counselors have any obligation to provide crisis services if they encounter them outside of a traditional work setting?
