Assignment Task: Opportunity From Crisis
The COVID-19 pandemic is changing our lives in difficult and often tragic ways. But it also creates new opportunities for innovation. The challenge in this project is to identify new opportunities that arise from the COVID-19 crisis.
The opportunity that you identify may be a potentially profitable business, but it does not have to be. Identifying a new type of community service, a new idea for a nonprofit organization, a new form of fighting for social justice, or even an artistic idea may all be legitimate topics for this project. You may identify opportunities that I or anyone else in the class never imagined. Go for it!
The important requirement is that an organization must be needed to realize your idea. Part of the challenge is to suggest effective management practices to that organization.
The organization does not have to be a firm. Clubs, nonprofits, schools, social movements, athletic teams are also organizations. Check with me if you are not sure whether something is an organization.
Before you select the opportunity for your project, make sure that your idea is new. Search the web, speak to people. Keep in mind that the idea does not have to be radically new. A slight and useful improvement on an existing idea could be an excellent opportunity to pursue.
Once your team has identified the opportunity, check the discussion board on Canvas to be sure that no team is working on a similar idea. No two teams within the section may work on the same idea. Post on the board to let everyone know that your idea is taken.
Describe your idea in the post briefly and clearly. If multiple teams end up working on a very similar idea, the teams that did not post it first may receive less credit for this assignment. If others pick a similar idea because the idea was not described clearly in the earlier post, the team will be responsible for the lack of clarity.
You will present your project in class. The presentation should be no longer than 10 minutes (8-10 PowerPoint slides). You will also submit a paper (11-point font minimum, double-spaced, no more than 6 pages). Use the following structure to organize your presentation and paper:
1. Describe the opportunity that you identified. Be sure that your reader understands exactly what that opportunity is. Explain how the opportunity is related to the COVID-19 crisis.
2. What makes you believe that there is a need or demand for your idea? The better evidence of the need you present, the stronger your project will be.
3. Describe the organization that would be best positioned to turn the opportunity into reality. You may suggest setting up a new organization, or you may suggest that an existing organization take on this project. Be sure to show why this organization is well suited to work on the idea.
4. Use course materials to recommend 1-3 effective management practices to that organization. What would you as a manager do to make the organization effective in realizing this opportunity? Be sure to connect each recommendation to specific course material such as reading, lecture, video, or exercise.
5. Describe how you used peer feedback to develop your project. If you did not use peer feedback, explain why you did not find it useful.
Your work will be evaluated based on how directly and carefully you address each part of this assignment description in the paper.
