The social activist artist from chapter 10 that resonated with me the most was the Lincoln Memorial. The reason I chose this artifact is that it was built in honor of the 16th president Abraham Lincoln, who played an instrumental role in shaping the country and ending slavery. The Lincoln Memorial provided a symbolically powerful setting for the speakers at the 1963 march on Washington got jobs and Freedom. Abraham Lincoln helped to end slavery before he was assassinated in the second term of office. I connect with the Lincoln Memorial because this artifact represents strength, peace, and union. I try to keep strength in my life daily no matter what I face, I am always trying to have peace or find peace in a stressful situation because I do not like to be upset and it is nothing like having a union especially in my home. I believe that Lincoln was chosen as the center symbol for the Lincoln Memorial because it shows how powerful his character was. He fought in the Civil war and ended slavery as mention earlier. Lincoln was both strong and compassionate and he wanted equality that why he freed the slaves. The columns represent the states that were part of the Union during the Civil War and the monument steps represent the 2 years he served as president and the other 56 steps represent his age when he was assassinated totaling 58 steps. Abraham Lincoln had determination, strength, and compassionate warm nature, his characteristics remind me of my own characteristics.

The artifact I connected with the most was the Lincoln Memorial. The monument is one of the biggest I have seen in DC and stands out to me because he was the president that helped abolish slavery. Even though I have heard he owned slaves it shows that even though you may have made wrong decisions in the past you can realize your wrongs and correct them. This is one of the values that I took from this class. You have to learn and respect other cultures and to me, I feel this may have been what President Lincoln could have realized. I also connect with Dr. Martin Luther King who read his speech right there in front of the monument. If I was alive at this time I would probably have been at this march standing for what I believe in. These two men are examples of greatness and they both represent characteristics we all should have as human beings. To show respect for all mankind and to stand for what you believe in.
