Listen to Handel's See Here the Conqu'ring Hero Comes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ou0lXyOZH0
Your task is to find examples within the piece that illustrate the concept of unity(things which stay the same), and variety (things which change). In order to do so, follow these steps:
Click the Play Button.
Watch the counter and click the pause button when you hear the end of the first musical idea (A or B).
Write down the counter time at the end of that first idea. Make sure you label the musical idea as Idea A or Idea B.
Then, click the "play" button again, and listen for the end of the next idea (Idea A or B).
Click the "pause" button when you hear the end of that idea, and write down the counter time, and whether it is Idea A or Idea B.
Repeat this process until you have covered the entire piece.
After you have completed the above:
1. Explain how Handel uses musical ideas, dynamics, and timbre to achieve unity and/or variety in the musical ideas that you discovered.
2. Consider the implication of the title of the piece, and describe how the music reflects the action suggested.
Please be sure to include the complete set of counter numbers from your Real Player in a single VERTICAL column and label EACH OCCURRENCE of the A and B ideas. When an idea is simply repeated you will need to indicate this as a new counter number with the corresponding label (A or B).
This way, we can see the overall progression of the form and the breakdown of the different sections and corresponding musical ideas at a single glance. If you're not sure how each idea sounds you can listen to them individually by clicking on the 'Idea A' audio link and the 'Idea B' link under 'Musical Ideas' in Lesson 1.
