Question: Describe how the impacts of climate change, colonialism, economic expansion and imposed settlement have altered the cultures of the circumpolar region
Acquire a range of information pertaining to contemporary challenges facing the peoples and environments of the circumpolar north
Please submit comments regarding the following questions after you have read the article entitled "They're saving the Eskimo from Civilization." and watched the video "Qallunaat! Why white people are funny"
The link to the video is at the end of this forum and the reading is in the Course Content file.
The assignment is due Jan 16th by MIDNIGHT which involves answering the questions below and posting them as a thread.
1) The terms 'snow house dwellers' and 'north land colonials' are used to describe the Eskimo who are .. 'just emerging from the stone age.' What kind of image does this create of the indigenous peoples who have lived in the arctic for centuries? How does this compare to how the video describes the 'white man'?
2) Who is saving the Eskimo from civilization? In your opinion, do they need 'saving'? What is the 'four pronged interest' of the white man in the north? Are the Eskimo really 'being brought into contact with relatively large numbers of whites for the first time?' Provide examples that would contradict this statement.
3) Briefly describe the barren lands colonization plan. How is this a 'new deal' for the Eskimo? Is there an alternate reason for the Canadian government to carry out this plan?
4) Consider who was invited to the first "Eskimo conference." Are there any people missing from this conference that should have been there? Why would they have been excluded?
5) Outline the goals of the 'rehab centers' Do you think they will be a success? Why or why not?
6) Consider the 'funny white man' in the video. What traits made you laugh? What was the film maker trying to convene with this video?
