Assignment: Thought Paper 1
There are two options for this thought paper. Please choose to complete one of these options. The options are:
1. Watch the movie The Social Dilemma on Netflix and then discuss in specific terms how it represents an hegemonic struggle occurring currently in the cultural worlds of the internet and social media. The movie has somewhat of a left slant to it - you can write in a way that supports that slant or you can take issue with, and argue, against that slant. Most importantly is that you identify a situation of hegemonic struggle that you see in the movie and that you use the terms resistance and incorporation to describe how that hegemonic struggle plays out. Remember, be specific!
2. Choose a situation of hegemonic struggle you see happening in culture today. The situation you identify may be from movies, music, the internet, sports, social media, or some other area of cultural expression. For example, you may identify how there's a resistance movement today for those who want to watch movies in some other venue than a traditional streaming service or in theatres and you may identify how movie companies are trying to neutralize that resistance through incorporation. Or you may identify how a particular genre of music, or a particular musical act, is trying to resist the mainstream music model and how they may be incorporated or not into that model. Or you may identify how certain sports figures are trying to go against the mainstream politics of their sport and how the sport is trying to incorporate them back into the mainstream fold. There are innumerable examples to choose from. The important thing is you choose one you can be specific about and that you use the terms of hegemony, hegemonic struggle and resistance and incorporation. If you're wondering whether a particular idea works or not, email me about it for feedback.
