Describe how reading short story differs from reading a play

Problem

Many of the conventions of short fiction, including characters, plot structure, conflict, setting, and more, are borrowed from the Greek tradition. Yet, reading a short story is a different experience than watching a play.

While a play describes the setting at the start of each act, a story may provide setting details throughout. While a play lists all the characters we'll meet on the first page, a short story gives us no indication whom we'll meet as the story progresses. These are only a few of the differences between them.

Describe how reading a short story differs from reading a play, in your opinion. Which reading experience is more satisfying to you, personally? Which do you find easier to follow/understand? In which genre do you find it easier to discern the theme, or existential point?
