The workplace is composed of employees with varying characteristics including, but not limited to, religious and political beliefs, gender, ethnicity, education, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation and geographic location. Those from other geographic areas or cultures, even within the United States, may experience some difficulty communicating in the medical professional environment. Patience and understanding are important traits when dealing with coworkers from other cultures. Most languages of the world are "tonal," which means that changes in pitch, change the meaning of a word. Although American English is not a tonal language, you can get some sense of this concept by considering the change in meaning via pronunciation for these two words; does and bow. Each of these words have different meanings and pronunciation depending upon how they are used. For example: How does he do that? The group of does (several female deer) in the field are eating berries. She tied a bow with ribbon around the gift. The actors took a bow when the performance ended. Basma is a recent graduate and has accepted a position as a Medical Transcriptionist at a private physician practice in the next town. She is excited to have the opportunity to explore technologies that will enable her to do medical transcription in the office. However, as a non-native English speaker, she struggles with English grammar and applying the rules of the written English language. While at orientation she became concerned with being able to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing.

1. Describe one negative effect that can occur when a Medical Transcriptionist does NOT have a command of the English language.

2. Describe how poorly performed medical transcription could affect the care of a patient.

3. Identify and describe one tool that could assist Basma with building her communication skills.
