Journal Entry 1
In Part One of the "Gender in the Media" project you will record the ways in which gender is represented in the media you use. You may choose any kind of media - television, movies, magazines, radio, music, video-games, internet, etc.. Your journal should fulfill the following objectives:
Objectives:
• Focus on one media source for each entry. Be specific - if you are focusing on television, choose a particular episode of a particular show, i.e. True Blood, Gossip Girl.
• Describe how gender is represented in the media source.
• Analyze how the particular media source relates to our course. For example, do images of women working contradict or reinforce what we have read and discussed? Are masculine relationships (with friends, in the family) represented in stereotypical or complex ways? When relevant, make specific reference to the articles you have read for the class.
• Connect the media representations of gender to your own opinions and experiences, i.e. How does the media source make you feel? How does it relate to what you know and believe about gender?
