Problem -

A certain earthquake detector consists of a very large magnet supported by springs. The magnet is housed in a box. The box is firmly attached to the earth and lined on the wals and top with coils of wire that are attached to the recording equipment. The output of the recording equipment is a seismograph, a chart that shows the movement of the ground.

Describe how Faraday's and Lenz's laws are used in this device to convert seismic waves into electrical signals. Your explanation must include,

  • your description of the two laws (not a definition copied from somewhere), and
  • the identity of what is moving - the coils of wire or the magnet. (think about Newton's laws of motion), and
  • how the direction of the Earth's motion can be inferred from the electrical signal (seismograph), and
  • how the amount of movement (magnitude) can be inferred from the electrical signal (seismograph).
