Question: Mark Twain used the Gilded Age to describe how everything looked nice and pretty on the outside but was really corrupt. The rich were only getting richer, creating a class of the super-rich, while the poor, just kept getting poorer. I think this is very accurate for the time period. The rich wanted to keep a division between themselves and everyone else. They would not even go to the same entertainment activities. They created museums, classical music theaters, and had their own social hours with their "class" of people. While working class citizens living in the cities had very poor sanitation and were living on top of each other, just trying to make ends meet. Politicians took advantage of these situations and lobbied for votes locally by giving locals things they asked for, such as a sidewalk.
