One of the drawbacks to unionization that employees describe has to do with "toxic" or poor performing nurses - what is the issue?

Unions will go to great lengths to support, coach and raise the performance level of poor performing nurses to ensure that union-standards are met. Unions have very clear process for discipline and termination of employment of poor performing nurses - this is to ensure that union hospitals maintain high standards and high quality of patient care. Low performing nurses generally don't like this emphasis on performance standards. Unions often make it hard for management to take discipline action against a poor performer and make it very difficult to terminate the employee, making it hard on all other nurses in that person's vicinity.
