In this lesson, you read an excerpt from Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe, in which the main character, Robinson Crusoe, is the only survivor of a shipwreck and is alone on an island in the Caribbean. He survives for 30 years as he battles natural disasters, hunger, cannibals, and the elements, before eventually being rescued. The news today is full of many stories of survival and how individuals have survived disastrous and horrific events, while fighting against Mother Nature or some other life-altering event. Using a respected news organization's website or an online magazine, locate one article written within the past five years that reports on a story of survival, whether it be the survival of a person or an animal. Describe the event endured by the individual or animal, how the person or animal survived, and how the person or animal changed due to this harrowing, or distressing, ordeal.
