Bob and Mary Smith have three children, Joe- who is 16, Jenny- who is 13, and Melissa- who is 9. Bob is a construction worker who stops off most days to drink at Ernie's Tavern with his friends on his way home from work. Mary is a part-time home day-care worker. Bob's brother, Frank, lives next door and has a close relationship with the family. Frank always has extra money that he apparently earns as a low-level drug dealer with the local crime organization and through the illegal poker games he holds at his house every Saturday night. Mary is deeply religious and very much involved in the Baptist Church. Joe has recently begun having problems at school and was arrested for stealing a car. Jenny has begun staying out past curfew, and she came home last week with a tattoo on her hip. Melissa gets much of Mary's attention and focus in her ballet pursuits. In fact, Mary call her "my little ballerina." Finally, just yesterday, Mary discovered a shoebox full of money in Bob's part of the closet. When she asked Bob about the money, an argument ensured which culminated in Bob growing angry and striking Mary. Police were called, and Bob was arrested for domestic violence.
