Question: Describe each major macromolecule to include the following: Basic chemical structure and the variations that exist (i.e. DNA vs. RNA, glycogen vs. fructose). Basic functions within the cell. Differentiate between the processes of dehydration and hydrolysis in the metabolism or synthesis of macromolecules. Choose your favorite macromolecule to expand on. Include a specific biological function your favorite macromolecule serves supported by at least one external, peer-reviewed resource. Example: The protein AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is an enzyme that adds a phosphate (phosphorylation) to other proteins to regulate their function. AMPK phosphorylates acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) to prevent its inhibition of fatty acid transport into the mitochondria. AMPK phosphorylation of ACC therefore increases fatty acid transport into the mitochondria so that it can be used for energy (ATP) production through beta oxidation (Dyck JR, et al. 1999).
