Assignment of Advance separation Technique
Topic - I want you to select ~ 20* recent papers (less than 5 years old) that describe developments in an area of separation science and provide a discussion of the contents of these papers highlighting the advances that are described that you think are of importance and why. Clearly with a relatively small number of papers it is likely that these will describe the only advances in that particular area and that is why I want you to indicate why you think they are important. You may feel it appropriate to select papers which provide different methodologies that address the same problem(s) and provide a comparison of these methods giving your views on their advantages and disadvantages.
Example topics
What I do not want is a summary of the papers without any thoughts of your own.
I do not want titles which cover very large subject areas, e.g. "chromatography", "HPLC" as the subject is too great for the brief above to be adhered to.
Examples
1. The application of HPLC/ GC/ CE in the post-mortem analysis of drugs of abuse
2. The application of HPLC/ GC/ CE/ HPAEC in the analysis of plant polysaccharides
3. The application of HPLC/ GC/ CE in the analysis of counterfeit beverages
4. The application of HPLC/ GC/ CE in the pharmaceutical industry
5. The use of GC-Olofactometry in the analysis of odour active compounds
6. Retention indices for the analysis of volatile/ flavour compounds in human breast milk
7. The universal calibration in the determination of the molar mass of polysaccharides
8. The analysis of volatile compounds in clinical diagnosis
9. The use of molecularly imprinted polymers in extraction of hormones from environmental samples
Workshop structure
1. What is a literature review?
2. How to plan a literature review
3. Where to find information
4. How far back in time should you look?
5. Contradictory results
6. Structure and organisation (Abstract/Introduction/Body/Conclusion/ Bibliography)
1. How Far Back in Time Should You Look?
As a rule of thumb:
Maximum time frame of 5 years for works to be included
2. Structure and Organisation
Abstract: short summary of findings should be undertaken last
Introduction: The introduction should set the scene for your review. The subsequent sections will go into specific details associated with your topic, but the introduction should include why the topic is important in a more general sense. It is helpful to end the introduction with a paragraph that clearly defines the scope and limits of the review.
Body/ Discussion: It is up to you what section titles you think are best to use for the review. They should be used to structure the manuscript in a logical fashion.
Conclusion: Try to bring together the topics you have discussed, and briefly highlight the key points. Also, it is good practice to speculate on the future directions the field may take.
Content
Contains relevant information to explain recent developments in separation science and how it relates to the analytical problem you have outlined.
Clear use of examples with supporting evidence including
figures and tables where appropriate (correctly sourced).
Try to avoid being to general - you don't need to explain
what GC or HPLC are for example.
Working within the word limit and include word count.
Structure
Clear organisation of material
• Introduction
• Main body with examples
• Conclusions (which fits the discussion). Think also about future perspectives.
