Healthcare professionals are all too familiar with the terms "quality" and "risk," but they were not always buzz words in healthcare. In fact, the healthcare field was behind other fields in developing standards to ensure safety and high-quality care. Considering the implications of errors in healthcare, one could argue that they ought to have been at the forefront of the quality/risk movement. This Discussion centers around the history of quality and safety in healthcare and the challenges associated with ensuring that standards are met.

In this Discussion, you will begin by opining on the reasons healthcare may have been behind other fields in developing standards for quality and safety. You will also analyze challenges associated with quality and risk and the factors that contribute to the challenges.
