Learning outcomes
a) Describe what theory is and its link with practice.
d) Describe contemporary social work theories and their underlying assumptions about the social, cultural and intra-psychic worlds of individuals, communities and societies and how they are applied to different social problems.
e) Demonstrate practice skills linked to theories discussed, such as relationship work, problem exploration, the process of assessment, networking, and advocacy.
f) Demonstrate the use of ‘reflection' in theory and practice in order to be able to respond to more complex issues with people and communities.
Assessment Task - Details and Instructions
This assessment requires students to demonstrate their knowledge of two social work theories (that have been introduced in the seminars and readings between Weeks 1-6).
Your essay should include:
1. An analysis of the readings, seminars, and group discussions for 2 of the theories that were presented in one of the first 6 sessions (i.e. between Sessions 1-6)
2. The analysis must provide a synopsis of the theories you have learned so far and how they apply to social work practice (including their strengths and limitations)
3. It is expected that you follow an essay style format (introduction, body, conclusion, with in-text citation and references)
4. Students are to go beyond the compulsory readings and it is recommended that you use a minimum of 10 references in your essay
You will be assessed on:
1. Relevance of answer to topic
2. Effective use of evidence/ research/ literature / sources
3. Extent of analysis of the two theories including discussion of strengths and limitations
4. Structure and development of analysis
5. Critical reflection about implications of analysis for social work practice
6. Clarity of expression
7. Grammar, punctuation and spelling
8. Referencing using APA (6th edition) conventions
