Problem

Canada's First Nations Peoples: Culture and Healing Lynda Gray is a member of the Tsimshian Nation. Her ancestral roots are on the northwest coast of British Columbia. She is an author and activist, supporting native youth who live in urban areas. Lynda shares the following about culture and healing: First Nations peoples are experiencing a revival. They are using their voices; they are speaking up about reconciliation, and the right to self-governance and determination. The connection to past generations and cultural practices provides them with strength for this fight to preserve their unique identities and to focus on healing and well-being.As more are working on understanding the past, they are looking toward the future with hope. Many individuals and organizations are helping to break the silence of past trauma so that true holistic healing and wellness can be achieved. Reclaiming cultural traditions helps to reclaim identities and find a place in the world. Many traditional ways, such as rituals that mark milestones such as puberty, marriage, and death are being revitalized. These rituals help to learn the skills needed to take on responsibilities and to cope with loss and trauma in a healthy way. There is a relearning of healing ceremonies and sharing circles to share and honour each other's stories. Some communities are hosting culturally-focused healing camps.

Increasing numbers are learning that health is holistic, not just based on physical needs. For instance, many people are now recognizing that our physical and emotional health can be greatly improved at a much faster rate through the teaching of cultural beliefs, practice, ceremonies, and other life skills that positively affect our emotional health. Lynda Gray refers to this as "culture as therapy" as she has witnessed the healing power that culture has for her people.
