Assignment:

Select a work of art related to the Harlem Renaissance that you find particularly interesting: a painting, sculpture, photograph, drawing or other medium. Conduct a close analysis of that work by describing its subject and style along with other information such as artist's biography, historical context etc. Carefully examine your chosen work and write down your findings. Try to identify aspects of the work's content, composition, style that links it to a notion of "Africa." Such can be masks or other elements that embody some imaginary concept of "Africa" for artists that may not have had first-hand knowledge of such objects from travel. Instead, artists often incorporated such objects to link their work to their imaginary ideas of Africa and what it symbolized for African Americans in the 1920s.

Questions to guide your own observations and how to engage peer postings include:

• Describe your chosen Harlem Renaissance work of art (close analysis)
• Identify any objects or references that link it to Africa (masks etc.)
• Conduct additional research to describe the possible meaning of these objects in the artist's work.
• Consider doing additional research to explore why your chosen artist referenced Africa and what meaning it held for him or her.
• What do you learn from peer postings? Are there ways in which your findings complement those of your peers or vice versa? Describe and explain.
