By now, you have read about the various ethical theories and principles, as well as ways to solve ethical dilemmas through decision-making models. You have also familiarized yourself with the code of ethics expected to be upheld by members of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
The purpose of this assignment is to explain how you might use decision-making processes when faced with an ethical dilemma. You will review and reflect on your own personal values and beliefs that may influence how you view and analyze ethical issues, solve dilemmas, and make personal and professional decisions. Reflecting on your personal ethics may assist in the greater understanding of the multitude of viewpoints regarding ethics and their cultural and societal influences.
You will create your video presentation by using a video capturing tool located in NCUOne. To access the video capturing tool, follow the tutorial found in your Books and Resources for this week.
Create a presentation in which you:
1. Address any influences in your life that you believe have shaped your position on ethics in relation to the theories of utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue-based ethics. Discuss each of the three ethical theories and provide your agreement or disagreement with the theory based on your own value system. You may want to describe how your background influenced your personal value system (i.e., religion or absence of religion, education, culture, ethnicity, family, and community).
2. Describe a challenging ethical or moral dilemma you have faced in the past. The dilemma could have occurred in either a personal or a professional environment.
3. Explain how you would address the dilemma differently, now that you are familiar with various ethical theories and decision-making strategies, and a professional code of ethics. If you currently work in a healthcare setting, you may also want to consider your employer's corporate culture and ethical stance.
