Question: For this Journal, look back at Chapters 1 and 2 in our textbook, "The Rhetorical Situation" video and "Composition as a Write of Passage" article. Then, compose a reading response, focusing on some or all of the following questions (try to answer at least 2 questions in enough detail):

Were you familiar with the term "rhetoric" before completing these readings? In what contexts did you hear it before? (Note that the phrase "rhetorical question" does not actually have much to do with rhetoric.)
How do you understand rhetoric now? If you had to explain what it is to a friend, how would you do it?
Look at the list of questions for purpose, audience, genre, stance, and media in Chapter 2 of our textbook and then think back to how you usually approach your writing tasks, whether formal (such as a paper for a class) or informal (such as texting or posting on Instagram). Do you think you've actually considered any of these questions before? If so, give some examples. If not, describe briefly how you usually approach your writing task.
Finally, I'd like to hear your opinion on what good writing and good writers are. What is good writing, as you see it? And who can be called a good writer? Do you consider yourself a good writer, and why or why not? And how can a class like English 101 help you become a better writer? (Think about the ideas in "Composition as a Write of Passage" here.)
