Case Study: The purpose of this paper is to analyze one art object from the period discussed in class (1350-1970) putting into practice the formal and critical analysis skills acquired in class. You have been asked to visit an art museum or gallery (e.g., the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Getty, Norton Simon, Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Latin American Art, Long Beach Museum of Art, an art gallery, or street art). Choose a work of art and discuss its formal characteristics in an academic essay of 2-3 pages. Please attach to your paper 1) a clear image of the work and 2) proof of visit to the museum (photo of you at the museum, ticket, etc.)

Question: Remember, a formal analysis is mostly a visual description of what you see, but it can also include what you hear and touch depending on the artwork. Describe as much as possible to bring the artwork to life with your words. You must carefully study the artwork to effectively write this paper. Think of questions regarding size, color, media, subject, and technique. Ex. What colors does the artist use? Are they appropriating objects from life? What materials are they using? How does the artist arrange the composition? Is it two-dimensional or three-dimensional? What does the label tell you? There are hundreds of different questions like these that you can answer when writing this paper. After you have exhausted the formal issues, use your conclusion as an opportunity to discuss how style creates meaning. Give me your opinion about what you think the meaning could be. Ask yourself, what key issue(s) is the artist addressing, what do they want their audience to learn or know? What is their goal with the piece? There is no right or wrong answer! Just do your best.
