Domestic violence is perhaps one of the most under-reported crimes in our country. Because of that, and because of the intensely private nature of this crime, the ordinary citizen may feel that domestic violence is something that only occurs in other neighborhoods or certain socioeconomic communities -- or even only among specific cultures other than their own. The reality is that there is no specific type of person who is more likely to be abused by an intimate partner; however, socioeconomic status and ethnicity have been found sometimes to be relevant factors in intimate partner violence. The victims of such violence also often share specific characteristics.

Some research has indicated common personality traits or other characteristics that are often found among the range of domestic violence abusers. Many ordinary citizens also feel that there is a particular "type" of person who commits domestic abuse. Again, this misperception often leads to thinking batterers are from specific cultures, ethnicities, or socioeconomic backgrounds.

This homework will explore some common characteristics of domestic violence victims and consider domestic violence across various cultures. You will also explore the impact of socioeconomic status on both abusers and victims and determine whether ethnicity, culture, or socioeconomic status are determinant factors regarding both victims and abusers.
