TASK: Design a test or assessment procedure for ESL, EFL or a foreign language. It should focus on one of the macro skills or one of the subskills. It is possible to offer a test for more than one skill but discuss your plan with the lecturer first. You will implement the test on five or more candidates, report on the results and evaluate the test.
Assessment criteria are based on the quality of a designed test and clear, adequate, thoughtful and systematic presentation and discussion. The level of understanding of basic language testing principles and the appropriate use of testing terminology will carry considerable weight in the assessment.
The test must be useful and practical, showing the presence of ideas of "effective assessment" that are embodied in this unit. It may contain elements of traditional testing, eg multiple choice or cloze, but you will need to defend them. You are encouraged to design original items or creatively adapt items from other sources; point out items you have borrowed wholly from other sources.
Part 1 procedure:
a. Describe and discuss the testing context: the institutional setting, intended candidates, level of proficiency, age range, and whatever further details you think contribute to the context of the assessment. Are there any difficulties in the design and implementation of the test or assessment?
b. Present an outline of the test, including some sample items. Do not submit a completed draft at this stage.
c. Describe and explain the marking scheme and/or relevant criteria.
