Basing your response directly upon the assigned textbook reading for this unit, write and submit a detailed essay (1300 to 1500 words, 4-5 pages) in response to ONE of the following essay questions:

A. Describe and discuss the forms of belief and worship in Arabia at the time just before Muhammad's religious reform. What other religions were practiced there, as well?

B. What are the differences -- historically, culturally, and theologically -- between Sunni and Shi'a Islam? In light of current events in the Middle East, why is it important to recognize these differences today?

Students must submit a substantial, detailed, and well-thought-out essay (of 1300 - 1500 words) for each unit.Each essay must include a thesis statement within the opening paragraph, and a bibliography/works cited page at the end.When submitting your essays, remember to type your name at the top of the first page. Please also type out, also at the top of the first page, the specific essay question itself which you have chosen to answer.

All essays must use Times New Roman 12 pt or Verdana 10 pt font, be double-spaced, have 1" margins, and include a total word count (not counting the bibliography at the end) which runs from 1300 to 1500 words in length (generally 4-5 pp.).

Students should use either the suggested method of citation of references provided elsewhere in this Syllabus, or any of the commonly accepted style guidelines for referencing sources (such as APA or MLA), including internal notes and a bibliography.All essays must include an introductory paragraph with a thesis statement (it is impossible to do well on your paper unless you take a clear position on your subject, captured in a thesis statement), followed by supporting arguments, and a summary conclusion.
