Question: Introduction to Cultural Anthropology

Describe and discuss a family gathering (family being broadly defined) using, and explaining, as manyanthropologicalterms and conceptsas possible. The gathering can be any type of ‘celebration'or event (secular or non-secular) that involves multiple people. It can be a one-time event, an event that you participated in numerous times in the past (a synthesis of the event so to speak), or even a fictional event. A particular holiday celebration involving the sharing of food with family and friends would be one example.

Although discussed as separate units in the course, various lifeways and institutions are integrated. Culture is holistic and highly symbolic in nature. This semester, we have examined subsistence patterns, economic exchange, marriage & family, gender (including division of labour along gender lines), socio-political organization &social control, and ritual & religion. How are these cultural institutions expressed in your gathering? Again, use the appropriate anthropological terminology to discuss the event, and look for the importance of symbolism in the communication of shared cultural norms and values. Most importantly, have fun with the material and use your imagination. Don't forget to protect the identity of the participants!
