1. Review the Geraint family case study

2. Using the template provided, and information from the posts that you and your classmates have made on the discussion forum, and with the case study as context:

describe your own, and other professional roles within a health and social care organisation.

You have been provided with a template of Powerpoint slides, formatted to five A3 sheets. Use this to provide clear, concise information, remembering to acknowledge the sources you have used with an APA 7th citation in the body of the slide/s, and an entry in the References list that comprises your final slide.

1. The first slide acts as a title page; add your name, UNE student number, the unit code and tide, assessment number and due date, your word count, and name of your Unit Coordinator.

2. On the second slide,

• Identify your own profession, and assign yourself a position related to the case study. It is fine to be aspirational!
• Describe your own profession and its primary responsibilities using the case study as context;
• Identify and briefly describe the professional, organisational, ethical and legal standards that govern your profession, illustrating with examples relevant to the case study; and
• Critically examine, and illustrate with examples relevant to the case study, the benefits and limitations of the entities (boards, organisations, peak bodies) that govern standards for your profession, undertaking responsibility for establishing and enforcing these.

3. On the third slide:
• Identify two professional roles apart from your own that work within health and social care in the context described in the case study; and
• Explain the primary responsibilities of the other two professional roles that you have selected in the context of the case study. Include at least three key duties for each.

4. On the fourth slide, use the diagram to identify any areas where your own and your two other selected professionals have similar or overlapping roles, responsibilities, and duties. Illustrate with examples relevant to the case study.

5. On the fifth slide, list all the sources you have cited, using APA 7th formatting.

JASON HAS AN ACCIDENT

Jason was driving home with his dad in the car when a car coming the other way overtook a semi-trailer, lost control and side swiped their car before colliding with a tree. Richard and Jason's car swerved and Jason lost control and collided with the semi-trailer. The truck then left the road, hitting a tree head on.

The Police, Ambulance, SES and Fire Service all attended the accident. It took nearly an hour for them to arrive from Glen Innes. Both Richard and Jason had to be cut out of the car wreckage. There was concern that the car could ignite due to spilt fuel during the rescue. It was a very chaotic scene with Jason unconscious and very badly injured and his father screaming in pain and also distraught about his son. As it was a rural road, an air ambulance was the quickest on the scene and Jason, who was more seriously injured, was taken this way to the Armidale Hospital with a doctor and nurse on board the air ambulance. Richard was transported to Armidale hospital via a road ambulance. The truck driver was also critically injured and was transported to Armidale hospital by road ambulance.

The Ambulance Service would notify the hospital that the patients were on their way and the A & E staff would be busy getting ready. They would try to anticipate what would be needed based on Information provided by the Ambulance Service. Based on reports of the patient's injuries, they would be getting ready to deal with head injuries, internal injuries, and broken bones.

Upon arrival at Armidale Hospital, Jason was attended to by the Accident and Emergency staff (A&E). His right arm was almost severed. He had a broken pelvis and both legs were shattered. There was internal bleeding and he has numerous cuts and injuries to his face and head. He is unconscious but there is uncertainty whether he has suffered a brain injury. Richard arrived at the Armidale Hospital about an hour later and went straight into A & E. He is also badly injured but conscious although he was given pain relief on the trip back in the ambulance. One of his leg bones (tibia) is broken badly. He has internal bleeding and broken ribs, a suspected spinal injury and a severe gash on his scalp. The truck driver Jim arrived around the same time as Richard and had a severe injury to his chest from hitting the steering wheel, and also has other internal injuries as well as a possible fractured neck.

The Emergency specialist heads up the team in Armidale A&E. There are doctors in training to be Emergency specialists (registrars) and junior doctors who have recently graduated and are being rotated around all areas of the hospital to get experience. There are registered nurses who work permanently in the A&E Department. There are administrative officers to help with the admission of the patients to the hospital. There are X-Ray and imaging staff who perform X-rays of bones and imaging of bones and organs to help diagnose the specifics of the injuries. The Emergency specialist considers whether evacuation to a larger hospital is needed in order to access neurosurgery and orthopaedic specialists.

Jason has experienced major trauma and once the A&E has triaged him and addressed the most immediate life-threatening matters, he is quickly sent for radiography and medical imaging of his injuries. His condition is assessed as critical, and a medical-based decision is made that he needs retrieval to a more suitable hospital as soon as this can be arranged. The doctors decide that the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle is the appropriate place for Jason. Richard and Jim the truck driver are both assessed medically as serious but stable and they are placed into the Armidale KU, both then receiving a range of medical and allied health assessments and interventions.

So far, because of the injuries to the three men, there have been the following professions involved, all of whom have their own roles and responsibilities, and have to work in a pressurised team and work environment:

• Ambulance paramedics
• An array of medical doctors including senior registrars, registrars, residents and interns, and limited availability of surgical specialists
• Nurses - particularly those in A&E
• Allied health staff including social workers.

Jason and Richard's family have been notified of the MVA and that Jim, Richard, and Jason are at the Armidale Hospital for tf present. Jason is being prepared for transfer to John Hunter Hospital due to the severity of his trauma. The A&E social worki arranges to meet the families at Armidale hospital upon their arrival.

Think about the information you need to know so that you can understand the hospital and health system, and how it responds to major trauma. Where might you find such information?

Assessment Criteria

2. Identify and describe two additional professional roles (Slide 3).
3. Identify similarities and differences between the three roles (Slide 4).
