Description - For this assignment, you could choose one of the two options.

Option 1 - Use the concept of allophones and phonemes to explain why this might create problems for non-native speakers to learn English. You can refer to some examples discussed in our textbook or presented in the PPT slides. You could also use your own language examples. For example, the lack of /n/ /l/ distinction, lack of /v/ /w/ distinction, or lack of /h/ /f/ distinction in some language(s). For monolingual English speakers, you can think about the example of the length of some vowels (longer before voiced consonants: bead vs. beat), the distinction between voiced and voiceless consonant (such as /b/ /p/-this distinction may be absent in other languages) and explain how that might create issues for English learners.

Option 2 - Describe and compare syllable structure differences in different languages that might create problems for non-native speakers of English. What are some of the possible syllable structures in the two languages being compared? How does that create problems for non-native speakers in terms of stress and the pronunciation of words? E.g. learners whose first language is monosyllabic with simple syllable structure might insert or delete some sounds in more complex syllables in English, a multisyllabic language (e.g. "development" becomes "developument").
