Assignment:

Loretta Ross, author of one of our readings this Unit, distinguishes between "calling out" and "calling in." She describes calling out as "the act of publicly shaming another person for behavior deemed unacceptable." Calling in, on the other hand, "is like calling out, but done privately and with respect."

Describe instances of calling out and calling in from your life.

  • First, describe an instance of calling out from your life. This could be a moment when you participated in publically calling out someone, or a time when you were publically called out for something you did. The calling out could be online or in person. If no instance like that comes to mind where you were directly involved, describe a call-out moment you witnessed: an example of another person or people calling out someone else that you saw happen.
  • Next, describe an instance of calling in from your life. Like above, this could be a moment where you called in someone privately, or someone called you in privately, or a time you saw someone call in someone else.
  • Reflect on the ethics of calling out and calling in. Do you think the calling out instance from your life that you described was morally appropriate? Why or why not? Do you think the calling in instance from your life that you described was morally appropriate? Why or why not? When, if ever, do you think calling out is appropriate? When, if ever, do you think calling in is appropriate?
