Assignment - Projects vs Operations Discussion
Description - Understanding the distinction between a project and an operation is essential to understanding project management. Moreover, this course is encapsulated within the project management process chart (see Table 3-7 Planning Processes and Outputs in Chapter 3 of the text and the PMBOK Chart document). This chart is vital to understanding the intricacies of project management. The process chart includes the 49 processes that are broken down into two groupings: process groups and knowledge areas. Understanding the project management process chart is all-important to your success in the course and on the PMI Project Ready exam.
For your initial post in the discussion forum, review the module lesson and address the following:
Explain the relationship between knowledge areas and process groups
Describe an example in detail of a project with which you are familiar (not that you were necessarily in charge of), that involves other people (e.g., planning a party, planning a family or group vacation, selecting and applying to colleges, finding a new place to live or moving, undertaking home renovations, coaching a sports team, or organizing a tournament)
Respond to at least two of your peers. Review their post and then address the following:
Do you agree with their explanation of the relationship between knowledge areas and process groups? Respectfully explain why you disagree with any statements, or help support and expand on their points to fill in any gaps.
Review the project they described and ask any questions you have about the details of the project. We will be referring back to this project throughout the course, so it is useful to take the time to help each other frame a detailed picture of what the project looks like now.
Finally, describe an example of an operation with which you are familiar and discuss its similarities and differences with the project your peer described.
