Discussion Post
For the discussion, very briefly summarize your thoughts on the ESRI website. How might demographic factors and other factors seen on this website assist in the development and progression of healthcare needs in general or for the location in which you live and work? How might a healthcare leader use this information to move their healthcare organization or services forward?
I. The Knee Surgery paper included with the readings talks about the challenges faced by one medical center in establishing a fair price for a knee replacement. Why should this be so difficult? What experiences have you had in healthcare either as an employee or patient that had similar issues to those described in the paper? What actions by leadership could have made this problem less intense?
II. The readings included "Ethical Lessons from the Undercover Nurse". While this report certainly generates an emotional response, and the clinical ethics are worth discussing at length, we will focus on the question that the author poses: "Why was there no responsible leadership?" Discuss using leadership principles, especially those related to this topic, what the appropriate response of leadership should be to the story and the subsequent public furor. Should Margaret Haywood be fired is one question; another is what steps the leaders needed to take? Feel free to focus on other aspects of the story.
III. ESRI provides demographic information across the nation even down to the zip code level. It is an extremely useful tool for any organization, healthcare-related or otherwise, for learning about their regional market. Click on the link and open the ESRI site; then click the Resources button. Choose 1 of the 2 tutorials (Learning Demographic Data Skills or Getting Started with US Demographics). You will then see tutorials 30 -60 mins. Spend some time exploring this site.
III. A doctor recently commented, "The presence of computers in the exam room has had another consequence. Both physically and psychologically it has placed a wedge in the doctor-patient relationship." Does the growing reliance on technology holds the potential for enhancing or hindering the patient experience? Briefly defend your answer.
IV. Describe an effective team that you have participated in or closely observed, either in healthcare or another setting. Briefly describe what made this team function well. What leadership qualities did you observe in the team leader?
