The first step in the MORAL decision making model is to clearly describe all aspects of the ethical dilemma. In the case of Ms. Smith, the parties involves in the dilemma are the family, the neurologist, the orthopedic surgeon, and the nurse. The dilemma has come about because she is being forced to receive care that she does not want. Ms. Smith's physicians and family feel that she will fully recover, but they have failed to communicate this with her. Ms. Smith is certain that she will never return to her former way of life, and does not see the value of continued care (Guido, 2006).
