Case Study
Five children from the one family come into care. The children have the same mother but two different fathers. They are aged 3, 4, 6, 8 and 14. There are concerns that the 4- and 6-years olds may have suffered neurological damage associated with foetal alcohol syndrome. Practitioners were asked to intervene in the family and remove the children, on the basis of long-term neglect of the children and emotional abuse they were experiencing due to an escalation of the domestic violence the mother was subject to, and to which the children were witnessing. There also tend to be several male visitors on whom the mother relies for financial assistance, even though some of them are abusive to her.
The children are placed initially, while decisions are being made about their longer-term care, with two different families, the three youngest with one family and the older children with another. The younger children are with kin carers, and the two oldest with a foster carer in the city. They are confused about what is happening to them, the 4-year-old wants to be with the 14year old, and the two other young children want to be with the 8-year-old. Most of all, all except the oldest want to be with their mother.
Two different agencies are involved with the temporary placement of these children.
