Questions:
1. In your own words, describe each of the three historical views (philosophies) of childhood (these are tabula rasa, original sin, and innate goodness). Each of these views suggests a different way to raise children. Which view do you most agree with and how would that influence how you raise your children? Be sure to clearly and completely explain your answer.
2. Consider the theories of development discussed in our text and lecture. Describe a theory of development that views nature as a primary factor in development and a theory of development that places a greater emphasis on nurture. Be sure to explain what we mean by nature and nurture and why you categorized the selected theories as you did.
3. With respect studying how people change as they get older, explain what a cross-sectional study is. Create or explain an example of a cross-sectional study that explores age-related changes in humans. Explain how such a study would be conducted. You do not have to find a real study, but your example must be appropriate and ethical. What limitations are there to this approach to the study of development? NOTE: Not all cross-sectional studies look at change over time. Be sure to spend time in our cross-sectional discussion before submitting your work. The point of this question is to demonstrate that you understand how such a study would be conducted.
4. Explain how an experimental study differs from a correlational study. Provide an example of each using human subjects to illustrate your understanding. Note that your examples must be realistic and possible, practically and ethically. (3 points) 5. What is the difference between "qualitative" and "quantitative" change? Explain and provide examples relevant to human development to illustrate your understanding. Remember, as always, that you must use your own words. Please note that these terms are not the same as discontinuous and continuous - such terms should not appear in your answer.
6. What research method involves the use of dependent and independent variables? Identify the research method and, using an example that is related to the study of human development, explain both of these terms. Note that your example must be appropriate and ethical.
