You may already be aware of a national initiative to improve health care quality that you would like to investigate further or you may search the Internet or one of the national agencies presented lectures for an initiative of interest.
This assignment focuses on:
- Examine patient safety and quality improvement initiatives and regulation
- Determine the role of nursing in the health care system, quality of outcomes, and cost containment
- Analyze outcome data to identify gaps between local and best practice based on scholarly evidence

1. Introduction - Identify the national health care quality initiative, including how to locate information on the initiative and why you have chosen this initiative to investigate further.
2. Describe the mission and goals of the initiative.
3. Discuss the population of focus or those served through the work of this initiative and stakeholders or members of the interprofessional team involved.
4. Describe the initiative based on the Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle (PDSA)
a) Plan -
- Describe the measures and scholarly evidence presented in the initiative that shows a need for improvement.
- What data is presented to show a gap between current and best practice?
- What are the proposed quality improvement outcomes?
- How does the initiative plan to make a difference in health care quality?
b) Do - What are the actions being taken by this initiative. What has been done so far?
c) Study - How are or will outcomes be measured and utilized to refine the initiative? Who oversees or assesses the actions of this initiative?
d) Act - Describe any refinement of the initiative based on accumulated data. Describe the outcomes achieved so far as a result of this initiative.
6. Summarize your paper. Include a statement of how nurses can be involved in this initiative.
7. Paper is to be three to five pages pages in length excluding the title and reference pages. a minimum of 2 current (within the past 5 years) scholarly resources.
