Assignment:

Write a 300-word paragraph responding to this prompt: Madison ultimately claims in No. 10 that factions are unavoidable, so it's best to control the effects of factions. This can be done through representative government. In the text, he states that the people will choose men with wisdom who may "best discern the true interest of their country, and whose patriotism and love of justice will be least likely to sacrifice it to temporary or partial considerations." A quick tour of Capitol Hill quickly proves that Madison maybe had an idealized view of those in charge.

However, was Madison wrong in his assertion that a large republic dilutes the spread of factions? We currently have two primary political parties in America, but there are various interest groups represented, as well.

Historian Kevin Gutzman has described a modern party as a "league of minority factions." For example, the pro-life activist and the gun-lobby member might have little in common, but they often vote as a Republican Party block.
