This chapter describes a holistic approach to generalist social work practice that includes several aspects used to inform social work practice. These include multiple dimensions of human functioning, ecological systems, social justice, and strengths perspective. Lal is a 29 year old refugee from Burma. She recently arrived in the U.S. with her four children. She and her husband divorced in Burma. She and her children came to St. Paul, Minnesota where she has no family. She is meeting with a social worker to address her needs for housing, medical and income assistance and employment, childcare, and education.
