1. As indicated in the figure below, oxygen diffuses to a hot carbon surface, on which the following reaction occurs:
3C + 2O2 → 2CO + CO2
Let Do be the diffusivity of O2 in the gas mixture. Derive the profile of oxygen mole fraction (x) in the direction normal to the surface. Assume, as one boundary condition, that the oxygen mole fraction is constant (x2) outside of a thin layer of gas of thickness δ adjacent to the surface. In addition, surface reaction follows a first order reaction kinetics (NO2 = kRCx, at the carbon surface). Derive the mole fraction distribution in the region [0, δ]. Although you cannot solve the ODE without all the numerical values provided, you are expected to express the mole fraction distribution and flux (NO2) in terms of all the parameters specified above.
2. Revisit example 1 in class, i.e. "diffusion of naphthalene", determine the molar average velocity (v*) and velocity of species A (VA) within the tube z (0 < z < L ). Assume that that outside environment contains very low concentration of Naphthalene. Although solution of the example has been posted, you still need to show all the steps.

Considering the balanced chemical equation at the beginning of Section 4.2, why is it incorrect to say that if we burn 2 kg of octane, we would get 16 kg of CO2 as a product
What are the values of delta H and delta S for dissolution of PbI2? PbI2 (s) --> Pb^(2+) (aq) + 2I^(-) (aq) You may assume that delta H and delta S are independent of temperature.
The main reason that distillation is a costly method for purifying water is the high energy required to heat and vaporize water. Using the density, specific heat and heat of vaporization of water from Appendix B, calculate the amount of energy requ..
Predict whether the following solutions will be acidic basic or nearly neutral a) NH4l b) NaNO2 c) FeCl3 d) NH4F, where NH4+ is Ka=5.6 x 10^10; F is Kb= 1.4 x 10^-11
Explain which distilation method (fractional or simple) would be most appropriate to seperate hexanes and dichloromethane.
Dissolving 4.69g of an impure sample of calcium carbonate in hydrochloric acid produced 1.07 L of carbon dioxide (measured at 20.0 degrees Celcius and 737mmHg). Calculate the percent by mass of calcium carbonate in the sample.
Explain what happens when these two chemicals are mixed in water and how would you write a balanced chemical equation as well as what state each substance is in
The equilibrium 2 NO(g) + Cl2(g) ? 2 NOCl(g) is established at 500 K. An equilibrium mixture of the three gases has partial pressures of 0.095 atm, 0.171 atm, and 0.28 atm for NO, Cl2, and NOCl, respectively. Calculate Kp for this reaction at 500...
Calculate the percent manganese in the sample as Mn3O4 (only part or none of the manganese may exist in this form, but we can make the calculations on the assumption that it does)
in an experiment similar to the empirical formula experiment in the lab book a student reacted beryllium and oxygen
A sample of gas with a mass of 1.58 occupies a volume of 941 at a pressure of 753 and a temperature of 16. What is the molar mass of the gas.
The product of acetylation of ferrocene are acetylferrocene and di-acetylferrocene. Why does the first and second acetyl group end up on different ferrocene rings. Explain why the organic rings in ferrocene are aromatic.
